Why Every Author Should Be Publishing in India Right Now
1.4 billion people. A surging English-reading middle class. Amazon KDP India royalties up to 70%. Most global authors are completely ignoring this market.

The India Opportunity — By the Numbers
India isn’t an “emerging” reading market anymore — it’s one of the largest English-language book audiences on earth, and it’s growing fast. Here’s the case in four figures.
Ebook Yes, KDP Print No — Read This First
Before the opportunity, the one honest caveat. Reaching Indian readers works very differently for ebooks and print, and most guides get this wrong.
Kindle ebooks on Amazon.in work fully. From your existing KDP account you can enable India distribution, set an INR price, and sell to Indian readers — paid on the same schedule as your other marketplaces.
KDP does not print or distribute paperbacks locally in India. Amazon's print-on-demand has no India print centre. A KDP paperback prints abroad (US / UK / EU) and reaches Indian buyers only as a slow, expensive import. To sell physical books to Indian readers, you need a local Indian print/POD service such as Pothi.com or Notion Press — and keep KDP for the ebook.
Why Most Global Authors Haven’t Published in India Yet
It’s almost never about demand — it’s about a handful of assumptions that turn out to be wrong. Here are the ones we hear most.
- “My book isn’t formatted for Indian pricing.” For the Kindle ebook, KDP India simply needs a separate price set in INR. Your manuscript and cover don’t change — you just add a rupee price alongside your existing ones.
- “I don’t know how Indian royalties work.” For the ebook, it’s the same KDP account you already use — only the territory settings differ, and KDP pays you on the same schedule. Note the India catch: the 70% tier requires enrolling in KDP Select (90-day Kindle exclusivity); otherwise India ebook sales earn 35%.
- “I assumed India only reads Hindi.” More than 300 million English readers disagree. English is the language of higher education, business, and aspirational reading across India.
- “I thought I needed an Indian publisher.” For the Kindle ebook, KDP India is fully self-serve — anyone, anywhere, can publish directly with no local imprint, agent, or gatekeeper. For a locally-printed paperback, you’d use an Indian POD service instead.
How to Add Your Existing Ebook to India — 3 Steps
If your Kindle ebook is already on KDP, you’re most of the way there. Adding India is a settings change, not a rewrite.
-
Add India territory to your existing KDP account
Log into kdp.amazon.com, select your book, and open Territories. Enable “India” or simply choose “Worldwide” distribution so your title becomes available on Amazon.in.
Set an INR price while you’re there. To earn 70% on India sales you must be enrolled in KDP Select and priced within Amazon’s INR band; otherwise India sales pay 35%.
-
Your ebook file works as-is
The same manuscript and cover work without changes — no separate India file. Consider adding a short India-specific author note to connect with new readers.
Want a physical book for Indian readers too? KDP won’t print locally in India — use an Indian POD service (Pothi, Notion Press) for the paperback and keep KDP for the ebook.
-
Add Indian keywords and categories
Help readers find you locally. If it fits your book, add “Indian edition” or “India” to the subtitle, and select India-specific Amazon categories so you show up in the right browse lists.
Pricing Your Book for India
Indian readers are price-sensitive compared with the US and UK market, so your US sticker price won’t translate directly. Price for volume and the royalties add up.
- Fiction ebook sweet spot: ₹149–₹299
- Non-fiction / self-help ebook sweet spot: ₹299–₹499
- Print books (via a local Indian POD): ₹399–₹799
At ₹299 with a 70% royalty you keep roughly ₹209 per sale (about $2.50 USD). That’s real money at scale: even 100 sales a month is ₹20,900 of additional passive income — from a book you’ve already written.
| List price (INR) | Royalty rate | You earn / sale | ≈ USD | 100 sales / month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹149 | 70% | ₹104 | ≈ $1.25 | ₹10,400 |
| ₹299 | 70% | ₹209 | ≈ $2.50 | ₹20,900 |
| ₹499 | 70% | ₹349 | ≈ $4.20 | ₹34,900 |
Figures are illustrative; actual KDP royalties depend on delivery fees, territory, and current exchange rates.
