Kindle & KDP India — Honest FAQ
Straight answers to the questions Indian authors actually ask about publishing on Amazon Kindle — no hype, no jargon.
This is an independent resource (not affiliated with Amazon). Where exact figures like royalty bands change over time, always confirm the latest in your own KDP account.
Can I publish on Amazon KDP from India?
Yes — for Kindle ebooks it works fully. You open a free KDP account, add an Indian bank account for royalties, complete the tax interview, and enter your PAN. Your book can sell on Amazon.in and to readers worldwide.
Is "KDP" the same as "Kindle"?
Not quite. KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) is the publishing platform — it handles ebooks, paperbacks and hardcovers. "Kindle" is the ebook format and store. So "publishing on KDP" can mean an ebook or a print book; they are different products on one platform.
Do I need a publisher or an agent to self-publish in India?
No. KDP is self-serve — anyone can sign up and publish directly. There is no gatekeeper, no agent, and no approval needed beyond Amazon’s automated content review.
Can I sell a printed paperback in India through KDP?
This is the single most misunderstood point: no. KDP’s print-on-demand has no India print centre, so a KDP paperback prints abroad (US/UK/EU) and reaches Indian buyers only as a slow, expensive import. For physical books sold to Indian readers, use a local print/POD service (Notion Press, Pothi, or a local printer) and use KDP for the Kindle ebook.
What file format does Kindle need?
A reflowable DOCX or EPUB. The old MOBI format was retired in 2025, so don’t build for MOBI. Use real heading styles so KDP can auto-build a navigable table of contents.
How much royalty do I earn on a Kindle ebook?
Either 70% or 35% of your list price. To earn 70% on India sales you must enrol in KDP Select and price within Amazon’s INR band (commonly around ₹99–₹999); a small per-MB delivery fee is deducted from 70% royalties. Outside those conditions, India sales earn 35%. Always check the current rates in your KDP account before pricing.
What is KDP Select, and do I have to join?
KDP Select is a 90-day Amazon exclusivity programme for your ebook. In India it is what unlocks the 70% royalty tier, plus Kindle Unlimited page reads and free-promo days. The trade-off is exclusivity — you can’t sell that ebook on other stores during the term. Note: Kindle Countdown Deals are not available in the India marketplace.
Do I need an ISBN for a Kindle ebook?
No. Amazon automatically assigns an ASIN to every Kindle ebook, which is all you need. An ISBN is only relevant for print books.
How do I get a free ISBN in India?
India offers free ISBNs through the government’s RRRNA (Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency). They cost nothing but can take weeks to months, so plan ahead. For print, KDP also offers a free ISBN; or you can buy your own if you want to be the imprint of record.
Do I need a PAN, and how is my income taxed?
Yes, a PAN is required. Complete KDP’s US tax interview and submit a W-8BEN so US withholding on your royalties drops from 30% to 15% under the India–US treaty. GST treatment of author royalties has nuances — if you start earning meaningfully, talk to a chartered accountant.
How and when does Amazon pay me in India?
Royalties are paid by electronic transfer to your Indian bank account on a roughly 60-day cycle (e.g. April earnings paid in June), once you cross the small payment threshold for your currency.
What size should my Kindle cover be?
For the ebook cover, KDP recommends 2,560 × 1,600 pixels (a 1.6:1 ratio), RGB colour, saved as JPEG. Design it to be legible at thumbnail size — that’s how most readers first see it.
How long does it take for my book to go live?
KDP’s review for a Kindle ebook typically takes 24–72 hours. Once it clears, your book appears for sale on Amazon.
Realistically, how many copies will I sell?
Honestly — most books sell modestly. Industry data (Nielsen India) suggests around 95% of new titles sell fewer than 500 copies, and globally most self-published books sell under 100. Publishing is the start, not the finish: sales come from ongoing marketing that you drive. Write because you have something to say, and treat sales as a long game.
Are paid "publishing packages" worth it?
It depends on what you want. If you’d rather hand off the work — editing, cover design, formatting and distribution — a paid package can be a genuine time-saver. The key is to go in clear-eyed: check exactly what’s included, compare the royalty split and rights terms, and make sure the price matches the value you’re getting. Publishing directly on KDP is free, so think of a package as convenience you’re choosing rather than something you need — and it’s always worth comparing a couple of options before you commit.
